Of what does one repent?
Job 42:6. Therefore I abhor myself, And repent in dust and ashes.”
Romans 7:14-18. For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin. (15) For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do. (16) If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it is good. (17) But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. (18) For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find.
Ezekiel 14:6. “Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: “Repent, turn away from your idols, and turn your faces away from all your abominations.
Comment: Job finally recognizes that he had met the enemy—himself! He does not say, “I abhor my sins” but “I abhor myself,” recognizing that the problem was not just specific sins—what he was caused him to fall short of God’s righteousness. As explained in Romans 7, we repent not only of what we have done but what we are that caused us to do what we did!
